Cleaning, Scrubbing, and Fixing Time here at the Community Center – by Maria Bosack

The Manassas Park Community Center was closed during the week of August 20-25 for yearly deep cleaning, and annual maintenance. Typically, there are fewer people and patrons here at the Community Center during this time making it the best time to temporarily close for necessary maintenance and deep cleaning.

We pride ourselves on our cleanliness here at the Community Center. Each day, our maintenance staff cleans the facility, including mopping floors, cleaning all the bathrooms, and washing the windows by the entrance. It is essential to clean the facility with a strong emphasis on details every day because accumulated dirt and grime can lead to wear and tear and to premature aging. No one wants that!

Because of all the activity that occurs in a single day in a recreational facility or a community center, there is a big difference between standard custodial care and specialized maintenance and deep cleaning. Routine daily cleaning, maintenance cleaning, and regularly scheduled deep cleaning are critical for keeping our facility looking and smelling like new.

During our annual cleaning week, the indoor pool deck received deep cleaning and general maintenance. (The hot tub is drained and deep cleaned weekly.) Since the pool was closed for two weeks in June for the white coat to be applied, staff followed directives that the pool not be drained again for cleaning week. This helped the indoor pool be ready for our members and patrons to use earlier than the rest of the facility as patrons were encouraged to use the pool beginning Wednesday, August 23.

During cleaning week, maintenance staff add waxing and buffing all of the floors (excluding the gymnasium) to their cleaning lists. In addition, added to this deep cleaning list is scrubbing of tile and grout, and power-washing sidewalks!

All areas of the Community Center are deep cleaned, the classrooms, the banquet hall, catering kitchen, both weight and fitness rooms, and the dance studio. Not one inch of space is over looked and deep cleaned! In fact, the free weights and machine weight equipment was moved and deep cleaned as well!

The gymnasium floor received annual waxing and buffing, and staff even climbed onto a cherry picker to clean the basketball backboards with cleaning solution!

Our preschool classroom areas also received a deep cleaning, and we moved all the stored equipment and toys and deep cleaned those areas too! It really is a huge job moving everything from crayons, games, and holiday equipment so that the floors beneath the shelves can be waxed and buffed.

Staff also applied some touch up paint as necessary including painting the curbs of the parking lots for safety and aesthetics. Staff also constructed new shelves to keep everything organized for the preschool, school age, and teen athletics programs.

The entire staff of the Manassas Park Community Center thanks you for your patronage and we look forward to seeing you here at the Community Center!
