Calling all dogs who live in Manassas Park — and their dog owners too! It is time to make a trip to the Dog Park at Costello Park. Why now? Well, there has been an improvement to the dog park, and we are sure you would like to check it out!

It’s our new covered wooden bench located within the large dog side of the Dog Park. As you sit on the new bench, you will appreciate the attention to detail as well as the quality construction.

Designed and constructed by Eagle Scout, Nick Hooks as part of his Eagle Scout community service project, this covered wooden bench will provide much needed additional seating for dog owners! In addition, their dogs will like nestling below the bench for a quick rest too!

Only four percent of all Boy Scouts make it to the prestigious Eagle Scout, according to the Boy Scouts of America website. For scouts to become eligible for the rank of Eagle Scout, they must work their way up through the designated ranks including camping, cooking, navigation, nature, aquatics, first aid, fitness, leadership, safety, citizenship, and Scout spirit. Nick made it through all the necessary ranks, and was looking for an Eagle Scout service project.

Nick obtained the necessary community funding and support to begin his project. He spent two Saturdays completing the covered bench project. During the construction phase, Nick and his father ensured safety by diligently displaying caution tape around the construction area.

Today, we can all enjoy the results of their hard labor! The covered bench looks terrific! Thank you from all of us at the City of Manassas Park, Department of Parks and Recreation!

If you and your dog truly love the Dog Park at Costello Park, please consider volunteering on the Dog Park Committee. This dedicated group of dog lovers hosts fun and exciting events for dogs and their owners and acts as a liaison between dog park patrons and Parks and Recreation staff. For more information about the Dog Park Committee, or to become a volunteer, please contact Jason Shriner at J.Shriner@ManassasParkVA.gov. The next Dog Park Committee sponsored event is the annual Doggie Paddle on Saturday, September 9 from 10:00am-2:00pm at Signal Bay Waterpark.

In addition, if you are a Boy Scout, Girl Scout, or a member of a similar civic organization looking for a community service project, we would love to work with you just as we did with Nick! Everyone benefits when we work together!
