My Favorite Camp – by Wendy Alvares

I have been working at the Manassas Park Community Center for over four years now. One of my favorite things about this job is working during summer camp season. The best thing about our camps is that we offer different types of camps for every child. That means I am able to do new and fun activities with the kids very week. Having a variety of camps allows kids to learn different things throughout their summer vacation. All of our camps are a lot of fun, but if I had to choose which camp is my favorite, it would be our On Broadway Camp!

On Broadway Camp is one of our most popular camps. I have had such a fun time programming different activities for this camp in previous years. During this camp, kids and staff create and rehearse a play or a movie during the week and perform it on the last day of camp. In the past, the campers have performed High School Musical, Teen Beach, Frozen, and Moana. This camp is a great way for kids to show their creativity. It is also a perfect opportunity for them to showcase their talents in design, acting, singing, and dancing. I love seeing the kids and staff get so involved, and the outcome is great!

My role in this camp is to make sure campers learn their scripts and dances for the performance at the end of the week. I also have to make sure campers are always comfortable and having FUN! In order to make that happen, I make sure they all agree with the play or movie they are performing. During the week, I help them rehearse and edit their lines and make sure they are able to make their own props and choreography. Before they know it, the end of the week comes and they are performing in front of a crowd. They love it!

As it happens, On Broadway Camp is happening this week! Younger campers chose Trolls as their performance this year and older campers are performing Descendants 2. We encourage you to come watch our campers perform on Friday at the Community Center! Performances begin at 3:00pm and will take place in the Banquet Hall. We hope to see you there!
