As we begin another exciting basketball season here at the Community Center, I’d like to point out a few improvements and changes we’ve made!
First, parents and fans of our 10/12 Basketball Division have probably noticed that some of their games will be hosted at the Manassas Park Middle School this season. We believe this is an opportunity for players to become more familiar with a high school setting. Should they wish to continue playing basketball during high school, they will already have a feel for it! Our 13/15 Division games are also hosted there in hopes this inspires kids to grow as players. I believe our older divisions demonstrate the teamwork and dedication for basketball the best. Many of the 13/15 Division players started their journey in our younger age groups and have grown over time at the Community Center. We hope they lead by example for the younger age groups.
Along with those changes, you may have noticed a new face around our gymnasium. Please help us in welcoming our newest staff member this basketball season, Kyle Henry! Some of you may recognize him from our Athletic Summer Camps this past summer. Kyle has recently graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School. In an interview, Kyle has said “I am most excited to see young players grow in many aspects such as teamwork, self-accountability, and initiative. Teamwork and comradery make the sport truly its best when the whole team runs a play and everyone performs to their best.”
Lastly, I would like to acknowledge two additions to our new volunteer Cheer Staff – Head Coach Valerie Estright and Assistant Coach Jennifer Ventura. This will be Valerie’s first year being MPYBL’s Winter Cheer Coach. However, she is not new to our staff. Valerie as well as many of her family members have participated in some form in our basketball league. She has years of experience, not only as a volunteer coach but also as a cheerleader! Assistant Coach Jennifer has been a volunteer for two years now and her daughters have grown through our cheer program. With their help, our cheer and basketball programs are sure to run as smoothly as possible this season!
Finally, I’d like to thank our staff, volunteers, and families and encourage them to adopt a team mindset this season!
