Interning at MPCC – By Derek Appleton

Derek Appleton City of Manassas Park Department of Parks and Recreation Summer 2016 Intern

Derek Appleton City of Manassas Park Department of Parks and Recreation Summer 2016 InternMy name is Derek Appleton, and I am a rising senior at James Madison University. My major is Sports and Recreation Management with a minor in Business.  Last summer (and again this summer), I will work with Athletics Recreation Specialist, Mike Arrington, to complete an internship where I will gain hands-on experience and knowledge of the sports and recreation industry.

Last summer, I completed my practicum which is a shortened version of an internship. I was required to complete 60 hours of service. I worked directly with Mike, and was responsible for activities including gym supervision and coordinating youth athletic classes.

My summer internship this year focuses more on the time and duties related to the background work necessary for running athletic programs and activities at the Community Center.  I will be required to complete 400 hours of service relating directly to the programming and implementation of athletic programs and activities for those of all ages at the Community Center and Signal Hill Park. In addition, I will work with other administrative staff throughout the Department of Parks and Recreation such as Marketing Manager, Jason Shriner, and Operations and Aquatics Manager, Sarah Barnett. This wide range of responsibilities will not only enable me to gain experience with the athletics division, but throughout all divisions of the Department.

This opportunity will allow me to increase my knowledge in the sports and recreation industry for my future career. The types of jobs associated with a degree in Sports and Recreational Management include: camp director, community center director, marketing specialist, recreation sports director, and youth program director.  The Sports and Recreation industry is very competitive, but I am willing to put in the hard work necessary to succeed. By working directly with Mike, and the other staff mentioned, I will not only establish valuable connections, but I’ll gain invaluable experience to help me in my future career.

I look forward to learning more about the sports and recreation industry with the staff here at the City of Manassas Park Department of Parks and Recreation. If you see me around the Community Center please say hello! I would love to hear your insights on the industry and the Department.
