The Value of Summer Sports Camps During the Pandemic – by Mike Arrington

Campers take a break from camp to go on a nature hike around the Manassas Park Community Center

Summer sports camps can provide a lot of value to attendees, especially during these times. The opportunity for athletes to get out and participate in their favorite sports is essential to their physical and emotional development. With restrictions starting to become more and more relaxed and the increasing availability of opportunities for athletes to play sports, here are seven reasons why you should choose MPCC sports camps!

To Try New Things: Most sport camps offer activities that children probably aren’t able to do in their neighborhood, and staying home and doing “the same-old same-old” can get old after a while. Sports camps keep the summer interesting!

To Meet New People: Sport camps grant a chance to get to know people from different schools, different states, and even different countries. They’re a great way to make new friends and learn about different places and cultures.

To Take on a Challenge: Signing up your child for new camps they’ve never tried before isn’t easy- and it’s not supposed to be! Fresh challenges, like trying new sports, learning a new skill, or pushing yourself to achieve something can be very rewarding.

To Get a Change of Scenery: Sport camps offer a perfect opportunity to get away from the familiar and make a fresh start. Your child will see and experience a variety of new environments and discover how to think, feel, and act outside of normal surroundings.

To Learn New Skills: Sport camps provide plenty of opportunities to learn something new, such as mixed martial arts (MMA), Ninja & Samurai warrior, basketball, soccer, or lacrosse. They may even become your child’s new favorite hobby! Camp can also help develop important life skills like independence, self-reliance, and confidence. Spending time with a whole group of people is also a great way to learn about cooperation, compromise, and tolerance.

To Get Healthy: You can’t be a couch potato when you go to sports camps! Playing sports are a great way to get exercise and fresh air, and is a much healthier alternative to simply hanging around at home.

To Have FUN! When you get right down to it, going to sports camps is all about having a good time- and isn’t that what we’re all looking for?

Don’t let your camper miss out on these benefits due to the current pandemic. Summer sport camps can still run while

following social distancing guidelines and with more safety procedures. At the Community Center, health and safety are our top priorities. All camps will have measures in place to help limit the spread of COVID-19. Such measures will include:

  • Campers will be placed into small groups to allow social distancing
  • Keeping groups in separate spaces while in attendance
  • Preventing groups of children from coming in contact with other groups of children
  • Enhanced cleaning and staffing patterns that minimize movement of staff between groups of children throughout the day
  • Following Virginia guidelines for sports activity during the pandemic
  • Encouraging social distancing of 6 feet
  • Encouraging frequent hand washing
  • Encouraging the use of masks face coverings
  • Sanitizing frequently touched surfaces

We understand that camps will look and feel a little bit different this summer, but we assure you that your camper will still enjoy the benefits from participating in one of our MPCC summer camps!
